The coal that the Raven Project proposes to remove is bituminous coal. Bituminous coal is dark brown to black and has a relatively high heat value. It is the most abundant form of coal and is commonly found in the Comox Valley. The variety of bituminous coal that the project is proposing to mine is “metallurgical” or “steel-making” coal that is an essential component of steel.
