When you woke up this morning, chances are you had a bite to eat and jumped in your car, on your bike, or on the bus to work and didn’t think twice about it. But modern day life— the houses we live in, the food we eat, the transportation we use— depend on steel. Metallurgical coal is essential to steel production.
Studies show that 88% of the coal produced by the Raven Underground Coal Project in the Comox Valley will be sold for steel-making. The kind we rely on every day.
Over the total mine life, the project is expected to produce 0.7 to 1.1 million tonnes of processed coal per year.
Steel is made by combining metallurgical or “steel-making” coal with iron ore.
